May 2011 - Two of my grandchildren, Olivia (7) and Cameron (6) have their birthdays around Memorial Day. To celebrate I took the whole family for a Birthday Party Sail on Sandy Hook Bay. With us were my son Terry, his wife Peta, her dad John, her daughter Grace, my friend Stephanie Hurtt, and two cousins, Haviland and Lee Hertz. It was Lee Hurtz' birthday also.
We sailed to Horseshoe Cove, a favorite day anchorage from my childhood, located along what is now Gateway National Park. After lunch expertly prepared by Stephanie, we took off in the dinghy to explore and swim along the beach. After returning, and rinsing off the salt, we had a birthday cake, complete with Haagen Dazs ice cream and presents.
We then went for a delightful sail in gentle breezes, tacking and jibing across the bay. We sailed up to our mooring at the Atlantic Highlands Yacht Club after a beautiful sunset; everyone tired yet exhilarated by our wonderful Birthday Adventure.
