July 3-6, 2011 – Nina Anderson, an old friend from high school joined me for this 150 mile sail to Maine. After spending the first afternoon washing and drying all the boat laundry, we focused our attention on the Winthrop Yacht Club, whose members welcomed us with open arms. We joined their Fourth of July BBQ and enjoyed a spectacular fireworks display put on by the town of Winthrop, followed by the distant fireworks on the Boston skyline.
The next morning we sailed north in fine weather and gentle winds towards Rockland, ME. Along the way we spied a pod of Humpback Whales. We motored toward them and soon found ourselves surrounded by fifteen of these immense 50’ mammals, who were spouting all around our boat.
Getting closer to Rockland, we learned to dodge the ever increasing population of lobster buoys. We finally pulled into Rockland, and Nina was picked up by her former husband, Neil, who lives there. It gave me one day to prepare for my next adventure with old Prime Computer friends, Rob and Rose Batchelder.
