Beth & Phil Wilson, Longstanding Friends from My Hometown of Rumson, NJ Cruising Nantucket Vineyard & Buzzards Bay
Aug 30- Sept 5, 2011 – Beth and Phil Wilson joined me for a week of sailing in Nantucket and Vineyard Sounds, and Buzzards Bay. Phil and I both grew up in Rumson, NJ and we both worked for a time for Prime Computer outside of Boston.
The previous week I had sailed the boat singlehanded down from Maine to New Bedford. I met Stephanie there and after successfully avoiding damage from Hurricane Irene, we sailed to Hyannis to rendezvous with Beth and Phil. We spent our first night anchored in Hyannis Harbor, off the Kennedy compound.
From Hyannis, we sailed to Nantucket. Beth and Phil both wanted to thoroughly explore Nantucket, so we spent two nights there. One day we hired bikes and rode to Siasconset. We also enjoyed the Whaling Museum, learning about the early history of Nantucket.
We headed next to Cuttyhunk, in the Elizabeth Islands south of Buzzards Bay. The current was running so strong against us through the Wood’s Hole Passage that we decided to detour and spend the night in Hadley Harbor, a peaceful, secluded anchorage owned by the Forbes Family. After a restful night we continued on to Cuttyhunk.
Phil wanted to fish, so when we left Cuttyhunk we sailed around the Sow and Pigs Reef, but found no takers. The sail back through Vineyard and Nantucket Sounds was beautiful. We arrived late that afternoon and after a wonderful dinner ashore said goodbye to Beth and Phil.
